Alex Mccarthy, the Saints goalkeeper produced a stellar display against both Bournemouth and Everton in Southampton's last two crunch PL games and instantly gaining the attention from other clubs in the Premier League. He commanded his box expertly, claiming crosses and confidently punching balls away when they were whipped in from the wide areas.
McCarthy made two sublime saves with his feet. Firstly, he denied Nathan Ake before half-time and then replicated the save late on, keeping Saints in the game. This was before he made perhaps one of the most important stops in the club’s recent history as he clawed Ryan Fraser’s deflected effort to safety in the 94th minute.
He has made some tremendous saves against Everton also but finally he was beaten only to a deflected shot from Tom Davies. These kind of performances are not unusual for the man ever since he has been introduced to the starting line up just before the turn of the year.
Often, McCarthy has made some crucial, point-blank, reflex saves only to see the rebounds tucked home by opposition attackers due to the lack of awareness and presence of mind from the Saints’ defenders. McCarthy is yet to make a genuine, costly error for Southampton and this should be applauded.
Mccarthy was recruited as a backup player when he was bought from Crystal Place, on a three-year deal, which will expire in the summer of 2019. Therefore, come the end of next season, he is currently set to walk away for free. Simply put, many clubs will be waiting to pounce on this opportunity. If he continues his stellar form, he might even get a ticket to Russia with the current England squad.
