Argentine captain Lionel Messi failed to convert a penalty against Iceland in their opening group game in the World Cup and thus squandering a chance for Argentina to start their campaign with a win. The footballing world, especially the rival fans are having a real go at the most gifted player of our generation for faltering under pressure, however, one man has come up to defend Messi and it’s Argentina’s evergreen hero, Diego Maradona.
“I missed five penalties in a row and I was still Diego Armando Maradona. The two points lost by the team are not down to his penalty. He gave everything he had to give. He did his duty.”
That was a classy response from Argentina’s old superhero as their current superhero needs all the moral support to take his team out of the group stages since they have made it all difficult for them by dropping points against heroic Iceland, who are playing their first ever World Cup.
We didn’t actually believe what Maradona said, so had to look up on the Internet, and we found that was a correct statement from Diego and he did even miss a couple of the rebounds as well. It shows that even the best of bests miss penalties. It seems as if Messi truly wants to match Maradona he’ll have to miss a few more penalties.
