When the Fever Grips Kerala, Athira Renjith writes.
With only days left for the commencement of 2018 FIFA World Cup, football fans all around the globe are going berserk with excitement. It is indeed an overwhelming fact that the football fans in Kerala are welcoming it with such vigour and enthusiasm that can be defined as a tad bit extravagant than the others and it has been like this for ages in this part of the world.
The streets have taken on the colours of the flags. The walls, the electric posts and the roads have started wearing the colours of the competing countries. The diehard football fans of Kerala can be seen running around in a state of absolute desperation to mark their favourite team’s domain on almost everything in plain sight; while some of them go the extra mile by doing the craziest imaginable things that only the truest of football fans may be able to comprehend, albeit it may seem like utter madness for some people.

But in this festive season of the World Cup, it is a madness which the society accepts without complaint because there is no escaping the death grip of the fever once it spreads. This unexplained state of madness is one of the side-effects of the fever and will definitely run its course as long as the fever persists.
The obsession isn’t merely materialistic. It is not just the outwardly exaggerated show of allegiance towards one’s “Doosri Country” as they call it, but it comes off a more deep-rooted mental devotion. The unadulterated love for one’s favourite team is what riles up the passion in the minds of the fans. It fuels the spirit of the World Cup as well as verbal disputes between the rivals.
As the fans engage themselves in an ongoing wicked cycle of myriad exchanges of abuses and curses, histories of wins and losses, bets and threats and whatnot; the heat of it all makes the fan blood boil several times over.

Even the littlest of kids run around the playgrounds wearing the football jerseys aping the zeal of the elders, for they want to be a part of it as much as the others. The culmination of anticipation of the 4-year long wait adds beauty to it all. The euphoria ignited by the spirit of the World Cup cannot be measured by mere words but can only be felt in our hearts like a smooth well-rhythmed heartbeat.
Just can’t wait for the biggest sporting event to begin.
